Hekisuien Matcha in Australia

Founded in 1867, Hekisuien is a historic Japanese tea company based in Jōyō, Kyoto, within the wider Uji tea region.

Its matcha range stretches from approachable everyday teas through to higher-end matcha intended for traditional preparations. Rather than treating every matcha as the same, Hekisuien offers different teas suited to different tastes and ways of drinking matcha.

Ujiha is bringing a selection of Hekisuien Uji matcha to Australia, beginning with two very different teas.

Daigyoku

Hekisuien Daigyoku is the more refined of the two. It has a creamy, full-bodied character with balanced umami, gentle bitterness and subtle sweetness. Drinkers commonly report nutty, floral and vanilla-like notes.

Hekisuien recommends Daigyoku for usucha, making it an excellent choice if you primarily drink traditional matcha with water. Its richer character also allows it to work beautifully in a premium matcha latte.

Chiyo no Sakae

Hekisuien Chiyo no Sakae is bolder.

Expect a stronger vegetal character with savoury umami, noticeable bitterness and astringency, and cacao or coffee-like depth. That extra intensity makes Chiyo no Sakae particularly good for matcha lattes, where its flavour can remain present after milk is added.

It isn’t only for milk, though. Chiyo no Sakae can also be prepared as everyday usucha for those who enjoy a stronger and more assertive bowl.

Which Hekisuien matcha should I choose?

Choose Daigyoku if you want a smoother, creamier matcha and primarily enjoy traditional usucha, while still having the option of making a premium latte.

Choose Chiyo no Sakae if you prefer a bolder matcha, regularly make lattes, or want stronger vegetal and savoury flavours.

Both give you a different introduction to Hekisuien without needing to place an international order from Japan.
