Uejima Sourokuen Matcha in Australia

Uejima Sourokuen is a family tea producer with roots going back to 1835 in Wazuka, Kyoto.

The farm began when first-generation Tokusaburo Uejima established his own household and inherited tea fields and rice paddies. Nearly two centuries later, the Uejima family continues to produce Japanese tea, with fifth-generation tea farmer Noriyasu Uejima carrying on the family’s work.

Today, Uejima Sourokuen produces teas including matcha, gyokuro, sencha and kabusecha.

From Wazuka, Kyoto

Uejima Sourokuen is based in Wazuka, one of Kyoto’s important tea-producing areas and a place closely connected with the history of Uji tea.

The family’s tea fields extend across different areas of Kyoto, with different locations used for different types of tea.

Because of this, we don’t assume that every Uejima matcha comes from the same field, cultivar or growing area. Where this information is available for an individual matcha, you’ll find it on its product page.

Five Generations of Japanese Tea

Noriyasu Uejima began working alongside his father in 1977 after studying tea agriculture. His work has extended beyond growing tea to helping people understand and experience Japanese tea.

Uejima Sourokuen is also involved with Wazuka-cha Cafe, where teas from producers around Wazuka are introduced directly to visitors.

In 2025, the family established Uejima Sourokuen Co., Ltd., creating a new chapter for a tea-growing history that began in 1835.

Why UJIHA Stocks Uejima Sourokuen

We first discovered Uejima Sourokuen by tasting their matcha ourselves.

Rather than hiding the producer behind a UJIHA label, we now want Australian matcha drinkers to be able to experience Uejima Sourokuen under its own name.

The matcha we sell is supplied in Uejima Sourokuen’s original producer packaging. We don’t repackage it and present it as our own matcha.

This is part of where UJIHA is heading: bringing together matcha from Japanese growers and established tea houses so you can compare producers, origins and styles for yourself.
